House, Vale of Pewsey: phase III

New staircase, existing building
A further ten years later, in 2006, our clients returned yet again with a request for a large bookstore doubling as a games room as well as a garage and improved utility room.
By this time the planners said that enough was enough and, even after negotiation, would only allow a single storey double garage-sized extension above ground. The solution was to put the bookstore below ground, with a large rooflight over and glass doors with steps up at the end. This is partly underneath the garage, which is entered from the original extension.
The staircase in the original extension was redesigned with glass between it and the new study.
Materials are similar to those in earlier work, but glass has been used in partitions and balustrades in order to maximise light below ground.
The work is still in progress; further photos to follow.
