House, Marylebone: detail

Many of the alterations carried out in the past 20-30 years had left the house stripped of much of its original fabric; our work involved reinstating missing elements and giving coherence to its various parts. A few examples are shown here:

In the front area the staircase had been replaced with a plain steel stair partially blocking one of the vaults; this was replaced in stone with a simple wrought iron balustrade.

The staircase up to the third floor from the second floor landing had a crude balustrade; this was replaced, together with the cupboards under the flight.

The landing half way between ground and first floors was without any character; a splayed and panelled arch with capitals was inserted to give a sense of place.
