Farm House, Cotswold: overview

Farm house, Cotswold
When we first visited this house it looked as the view above, a small farmhouse with attached outbuildings around a courtyard. The large barn had already been converted for use as a living room on the upper level and the rest of the house was a multiplicity of small rooms. We converted the small barn as an office and utility room and created two bedrooms and bathroom out of the adjoining cowshed.
When, a few years later, we were again approached and asked to design an extension we did not realise how large it would end up being. Our clients wanted a robust and substantial family house with good sized rooms. The plan shows the original house to the left, now the kitchen, dining room and entrance hall, with the extension to the right. The local Hornton stone was used, with oak roof structure and joinery. The projecting bays providing shelter over external doors and panoramic views from inside were inspired by the loading doors and roof of the small barn.
